Edwards of the Winnipeg defaulting broker, will serve two years in the Manitoba penitentiary instead of ten. This is the sentence of the court of appeal delivered this morning after a most careful consideration of the case. In passing judgement all the judges in appeal concurred. They paid high tribute to the probity and ability of Police Magistrate Daly, but felt bound to decide that he had made an error in taking into consideration the former conviction, which had not either been charged against Edwards or served. They also held it improper for any police magistrate or judge in passing sentence upon a prisoner to be influenced by anonymous communication or general accusations. This had been done in this case. These documents which had so influence Mr. Daly in passing extremely severe sentence had been forwarded by Mr. Daly to the court of appeal in the report he made to the court, but they should not in any way be considered. The court was composed of Justice Richardson, Justice Perdue, and Justice Phippen, The chief justice was on the bench but took no part of the proceedings as he had heard the arguments. George Patterson appeared for the crown, Geo. A. Stewart Potts for the prisoner. Toronto, Oct 9 The marriage took place today of Miss. Toronto Oct 8, It transpired today that Mrs. Annie Orenstein, who died from burns received in the York street fire of yesterday, laid down her life in the effort to save her child. According to the story told by Mrs. Cohen, next door neighbor to Mrs. Orenstein, she escaped from the burning building by jumping from the window on a roof and into Mrs. Cohen's kitchen, but when she discovered her child was missing, went back climbing from the fence to the wooden addition and thence through the bedroom window, but she never reached the child. Firemen found her in the hall and sent her to the hospital where she died. The poor woman had been in delicate health and the strain was too much for her.
