Stray, were arraigned before Poice Magistrate Cowan on a charge of theft and remanded to the Mounted Police barracks until next Saturday. Roberts has been in the employ of S. Nankin, jeweler and optician, of Jasper avenue, since October 1st last Previous to that time he conducted a jewelry store in Lloydminster. Stray was a friend of Roberts, having become acquainted with him in the C.N.R. town For the past two weeks says Mr. Nankin, "I have been missing jewelry from the store and I have noticed also that there have been shortages in the cash. I have at first no suspicions of who the thief was" Mr. Nankin went to Pawnbroker Klien, who runs a store across the street and made arrangement with a former clerk, J. Barton, now employed with Mr. Klein and who was acquainted with Mr. Nankin's stock to keep a look out for any goods that might be offered for pawn. On Saturday afternoon the expected happened and Stray came to the pawnbroker's with a bunch of jewelry. It consisted of a seventeen jewel Sigin watch, worth 420, a solid gold chain worth $22, and a ring set in diamonds and pearls worth $45. The goods were accepted and the matter reported to Mr. Nankin who at once laid information against Roberts and Stray. The warrants were placed in the hands of Detective Griffith, who located the suspects at their homes on Knistino and Peace avenues respectfully and arrested them early on Sunday morning. Upon further investigation Mr. Nankin thinks the peculation's have extended over the past six weeks. Yesterday there were returned to the store the following articles, which it is alleged were given by Roberts to lady friends in the city. Three watch chains. One Sunburst pearl broach, solid gold One Ladies gold chain, 20 penny weights. One hoop ring, diamond and pearl. Two 10. K. gentlemen's gold lockets One chronograph watch. One diamond opal twin setting scarf pin. One hoop ring. One solid gold chain bracelet. One 14 k twin diamond pearl ring. One 15 jewel open-faced Waltham watch One Creosty watch. None of these articles were missed by the owner and he has little idea how much else may have been taken. The goods already returned total about two hundred dollars. It is said on behalf of Stray that he received the jewelry thinking it was part of the stock formerly owned by Roberts at Lloydminister. He will likely be released on bail. He is a married man about 35 years old, and has a homestead down the C.N.R. Roberts is about 25 years of age.
