1127 EDMONTON DAILY NOV 12, 1907 Secretary Weir of Stratcona resigns from the Board of Trade. A bombshell was exploded at the regular meeting of the Stratcona board of trade held last night when the president a few minutes after opening the meeting and then the routine business has been completed, read the resignation of the Secretary, James Weir, embodying the request that it take effect at once. There was considerable surprise among the members as Mr. Weir's coming retirement has not been suspected by any of the members. Mr. Weir, it is understood will devote his time more extensively to the interests of the Conservative party in the capacity of organizer during the coming months. Among those in attendance were MARRIOTT, G.W. - President WEIR, James - Secretary BUSH, O. DOWNES, Geo. (George)F. DUNCAN, Hugh LEWIS, R.P. FULLER, A.M. ALLEN, Thos. BLACKWOOD, M. WHIDDINGTON, H.M. McLEAN, A. SHEPPARD, W.H. BLAIN, James ROSS, W.E. The minutes of last meeting were read and adopted by the meeting. The president reported that no meeting on the council of the board had been held since last meeting of the board and therefore there were no reports. The Secretary Resigns. The following letter was then read by the president. G.W. Marriott President Board of Trade, Stratcona Dear Sir, I beg herewith very respectfully to tender my resignation as secretary of the Stratcona board of trade and would perfer to have it take place at this meeting. I find owing to the money stringency and accompanying causes that the work o f the board is not such at the present time as would warrant the payment of a salary at the rate of $1,000 per year and I see no prospect of any change at least for a month or two. I would suggest, however, that if a man can be found at a smaller salary to answer correspondence and keep the routine work of the board up that it would be wise not to leave the office entirely vacant. I take this opportunity of thanking the officers of the board for the kindly assistance they have always given me and I leave the office of Secretary with kindness towards all and malice towards none. I am Dear Sir, Yours very truly, James Weir, Secretary More to article see original
