1403 EDMONTON DAILY DEC 13, 1907 KAY, John MONTEITH, J.R. LAMONTAGNE, A.G. Alderman WING, Luk CHOW, Lee NORRIS, Edward TRESSIDER, Ewart RUSSELL, W. Lockhart LAW, Frank Montreal, Dec 12, John Kay, an Englishman in Canada only twelve months, has instituted an action in the superior court for $10,000 against McGee, chandler & McNeil, railway contactors, by whom he was employed in Northern Ontario, for alleged unlawful arrest and cruelty. According to his story he was hared at $35 per month and board, but when he got to camp was told he would get $1.75 per day, and must provide for himself. He claims he was discharged and went to a neighboring camp, but was seized there and taken back after being chained by the leg several days he was taken to North bay, where he was sentenced to a month in jail on a charge of desertion. When released he was told he could make his way to Montreal as best he could. Killarney, Man. Dec 12 Fire broke out at three this morning on the premises of the Killarney Guide Company, destroying the building and the plant. J.R. Monteith, publisher, loses all is books, accounts, files and subscription lists, and estimates his loss at $2,500 with insurance of 4500. The building was owned by Dr. Whyte. The loss was $500. This is the second time the guide has been burned out in seven years. Monteith is making preparations to start again and has ordered a new plant. Renfrew, Ont., Dec 13 Alderman A.G. Lamontagne, who conducted a tailoring business here, left suddenly yesterday with his family and personal effects for parts unknown, He was deeply in debt but paid nothing. Winnipeg, Dec 13, Fire Broke out at half pas five this morning in the Chinese laundry on Salter Ave., and two inmates, Luke Wing and Lee Chow, were burned to death. The laundry was a frame building in the north end and was licked up by the flames almost before the alarm was given. Regina, Dec 13, - fireman Edward Norris, of the Canadian Northern who was run over here last night by a Canadian Pacific local, died this morning. He was severely cut about the head and both legs had to be amputated. He came from Winnipeg where his wife lives. Ottawa, Dec 13, Ewart Tressider, a South Africa veteran, who was accused of bigamy, pleaded guilty this morning, He was remanded till Monday for sentence. Toronto, Dec 12, The attorney general will be asked to issue a warrant to bring W. Lockhart Russell back to Toronto to stand trial in connection with the conspiracy charges growing out of the exploitation of the Highland Mary mine. Counsel for the defense had undertaken to produce Lennox in court but yesterday, after the case of the crown against Frank Law and Russell had been adjourned, counsel admitted that he was unable to do so. Russell was last heard of in Paris, France.
