1427 EDMONTON DAILY DEC 16, 1907 SANGSTER, John WARNER, Alfred GORMLEY, A.E. BRENDELL, Wm. (William) SWINTON, William LIPHARDT, W.P. BAIN, D.A. Halifax, Dec 15, the seven year old son of John sangster lost his life by drowning at New Harbor, Guysboro, today. The boy was playing with his elder brother on thin ice when he went through. The mother who saw the accident rushed to the assistance of both and at one time it looked as if all three would be drowned. Finally, by the aid of a sister, the mother and the older son were rescued. Rainy River, Ont. Dec 15, The mystery surrounding the many thefts from local stores which have occurred within the past month was cleared up this morning with the arrest and conviction of Alfred Warner, a twelve-year-old boy. Last evening he was seen by A.E. Gormley, of the firm of A.P. McDonald & Co., to be acting suspiciously in front of the store where some goods were displayed. A clerk secured the boy and brought him into the store, where after close questioning he confessed that he had stolen articles from other stores in town. A search warrant was secured and the house of his uncle. Wm. Brendell, with whom he lived, was searched, which disclosed what appeared to be the result of months of stealing. Dry goods, valued at several hundred dollars, much of which was claimed by local merchants was discovered. The boy was this morning sentenced by Police Magistrate Morton to three years in the provincial reformatory. Brendell, who has lived in town for the past three years, and who had never been suspected is under arrest for complicity in the thefts and will come up for hearing before the police magistrate this afternoon. Port Arthur, Dec 16, William Swinton, forty years of age, attempted suicide yesterday afternoon, shooting himself in the mouth with a revolver. He did not prove successful. Swinton is charges with confiscating goods from the C.P.R. freight sheds. The case was to have come up on Wednesday. Broeding over the affair is supposed to have slightly deranged his mind. He is improving steadily. Macleod, Dec 15, Fire broke out in a vacant building, which was partly burned last August, and form the way the fire started it is believed the blaze was incendiary. The brigade was on the spot in short order, and ten minutes after the alrm was given two streams of water were put on the blaze, which was very fierce. The flames spread to a Chinese laundry and totally destroyed it, together with a building occupied by some Chinamen as a store. W.P. Liphard, jeweler, and D.A. Bain, Taylor, has their goods ready to remove as they were in danger of being burned out, but the firemen got the flames under control and saved the premises. Superintendent of Water Works Altham was ordered a double whistle to be put on the power hose as a fire alarm.
