1459 EDMONTON DAILY DEC 19, 1907 TARTE, J. Israel Hon. EAROT, Ernest L. KELLER, D.L. Captain GRIFFIN, Dr. GRIFFIN, John Montreal, Dec 18, 1907 - Hon J. Israel Tarte, former Minister of Public Works in the Dominion Cabinet, died 2.50 o'clock this afternoon at his residence at Boucherville. The late Mr. Tarte was one of the most picturesque figures in the modern political life of Canada, and one whose fund of humor and outspoken ways won him the regard of many men in both political parties. He was born Jan 11, 1848, a son of Joseph Tarte, a farmer and married Miss Ayloutre, He was educated at the College of L'Assomption. He was a member of the Quebec legislature from 1877 to 1881. Shawnee, Dec 19, A man, who from a letter found in his pocket, is believed to be Ernest L. Earot, of Winnipeg, Man, was murdered in the Rock Island West yards here early this morning. The body, however was not found until 7.30 when a section foreman, John Sullivan, notified the coroner and police, An investigation, disclosed that the murdered man has been shot through the breast by a 45 Colts gun that penetrated nearly through his body, the bullet being removed from the lower side of his back. In addition to some small money, a card in the Amalgamsted Order of Sheet Metal Workers and three letters were found, one from M. Scure? Of Grand View, Man, one from his mother and one from a sister Alice Wilson of Winnipeg. The police have three men under arrest, but they deny any knowledge of the affair. They have been put through a sweating process and will be held pending developments. The Coroner's jury will probably hold an inquest on the body. Vancouver B.C. Dec 19, The capture of Capt. D.L. Keller, alias Smith formerly of the U.S. Army, arrested yesterday at Kamloops, was due to the watchfulness of the manager of the Bank of Hamilton, Keller had been living in the district several months, posing as capitalist. He had bought a ranch and erected a hotel at Adam's Lake. Recently he came in to town and presented a cheque for $92,500 which it is alleged Keller stole in blank and later forged while an army officer at Fort Sheridan, Ill. The bank advanced only $400 on the cheque. Keller declared the money was the proceeds of a big land sale. United States secret service men were called into the case, and the arrest followed. John McGrery, of Brantford who was groomsman at the wedding fifty years ago was among those who sent congratulations.
