725 EDMONTON DAILY SEP 26, 1907 CARPENTER, E. Major OLIVER, Thomas Hamilton, Sept 25, 1907 Major E. Carpenter, A.M.P. representing South Wentworth in the Commons for 13 years, dropped dead this morning at his home in Fruitland while he was dressing. Vancouver Sept 25, 1907 Thomas Oliver of whom little is known except that he arrived recently from the east and is thought to have been a commercial traveler, died in the hospital from acute opium poisoning. An inquest was held by Coroner McGuigan and friends of the deceased gave eveidence that when they parted from Oliver he told them he was going to Chinatown "to hit the pipe." Early the next morning he was admitted to the hospital and later died from an overdoes of opium. Dr. Coulhard and Dr. Conkin declared that the man was beyond human help when admitted to the hospital. The coroner's jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence and Dr. McGuigan added that he was prepared to give every assistance to the police in their fight to close the opium dens.
