Girl Gets Gold Medal
Red Deer Graduate Wins Top 'U' Award
EDMONTON, May 15 (CP)-- Eion Laird Whitney of Red Deer, a 28-year-old graduate in arts and science, was announced today as winner of the governor-general's gold medal, premier award at the University of Alberta.
G. B. Taylor, university registrar, announced today the names of winners of prizes and awards to be presented at convocation ceremonies Tuesday and Wednesday.
MISS RUTH Olive Ann Renne of Calgary, a graduate in agriculture, was given the gold medal of the Alberta branches of the Agricultural Institute of Canada.
Israel Arnold Lesk of Medicine Hat, was awarded the Henry Birks and Son gold medal in applied science.
Four gold medals from the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta were at stake.
The governor-general's medal is given for the highest scholastic standing of graduate students.
Mr. Whitney took first class honors in mathematics and last year was winner of the Putnam mathematical competition.
His university career was interrupted by five years' service in the air force.
