Mrs. H. W. Riley Begins 30th Presidential Term

 

Mrs. Harold Riley was re-elected president of the Alberta Council on Child and Family Welfare Friday and so begins her 30th year as head of the organization.

In her presidential address she urged council members to "keep their vision, hold fast to their ideals and go back to their organizations and work for what they felt was right." There had been a great deal of opposition to the establishment of family allowances, pre-school age and baby clinics, old age pensions and family courts, but the first three were put into force and the latter was in the process of being introduced. "Some people thought the allowances, the clinics and the pension were a form of charity but there's no room for snobbery in welfare legislation."

MRS. D. K. SHEDDEN presented the treasurer's report which showed receipts totalling $415 disbursements, $382; balance in reserve? fund, $387 balance in savings fund, $191.

Mrs. F. E.  Hammer chairman of the education division  gave an outline of the current school and university picture in Calgary. She reported that the new schools in the new areas in the city were mostly filled to capacity and in some cases additional rented space was being used. Since 1945 seven elementary schools had been built and additional rooms constructed at Western Canada, Crescent Heights and Technical and Commerce schools. There were also extra rooms being constructed at five elementary schools.

"BUT FURTHER accommodation will be needed by 1956," declared Mrs. Hammer. She stated there were 41 elementary schools, six junior high and three senior high schools in the city at the present time, employing 573 teachers.

Dingle, for home welfare organizations; third, Mrs. Eva McIntosh, Provincial Children's Work Board; fourth, Mrs. Russell Clark, Local Council of Women; fifth, Mrs. H. E. Downe, Indian Association of Alberta; sixth, Mrs. J. R. Kohn, Calgary Community Recreation Association; seventh, Mrs. J. Prendergast of Red Deer, Loyal Orange Benevolent Association; eighth, Major Edna Burrows Booth Memorial Home, Salvation Army; ninth, Miss Ena Paul, Provincial Girls Work Board; 10th, Mrs. Ben Pearlman, Calgary Council of Jewish Women; 11th, Mrs. Ray Atkinson, Y.W.C.A.; 12th, Mrs. R. H. Evans, Lethbridge, executive director of the Welfare Centre;  secretary, Mrs. L. G. Fisher, Alberta branch, Canadian Amateur Swimming Association; treasurer, Mrs. D. K. Shedden, children's program.

Chairmen of divisions: Hygiene, Mrs. C. C. Rose; education, Mrs. F. E. Hammer; recreation, Mrs. J. R. Kohn and Mrs.George Reynolds; neglect, delinquency, dependency and defect, Mrs. Harold W. Riley; moral and spiritual welfare, Mrs. Eva McIntosh and Mrs. J. A. Wyatt.
