Desk And Derrick Club Has M.P. As Anniversary Speaker

Calgary's Desk and Derrick Club, the first oil women's organization in Canada, celebrated its first anniversary with a banquet and meeting Tuesday evening at the Al-San club, when its slate of officers for 1952 was elected, and the guest speaker was Mr. Carl Nickle, M.P.

Miss Edna Resky was elected president, succeeding Miss Eleanor Crockett, who presided at the affair.

SPEAKING ON  "Your First Year, Oil's Past Year, and The Future," Mr. Nickle congratulated the club on attaining the two objectives with which it started: providing the means for women in the oil industry to meet and become better acquainted with one another and providing the means for oil women to learn more about the industry.

"Oil is now second only to agriculture in Alberta in terms of production and employment, and is first in terms of revenue to the provincial treasury, for the benefit of present and coming generations of Albertans," declared the speaker. In reviewing the industry's activities in 1951 Mr. Nickle said that more than $200,000,000 was poured into Western Canadian oil and gas exploration, development and land and already in 1952 oil or gas discovery had come at seven wildcats, including three oil and two gas discoveries in Alberta.

"ALBERTA IS THE HEART of Canada's oil and gas industry, and led the 1951 discoveries with 98 finds, including 35 oil strikes and 63 gas discoveries," said Mr. Nickle. He declared that the past year gave assurance that the Alberta basin is, and  will continue to be for many years, a highly favored hunting ground for oil and gas.

"The rich reserves so far found are probably only a small part of the ultimate reserves and, including production to date and reserves on tap, amount to over two billion barrels of oil, and over twelve trillion cubic feet of natural gas."

OF THE FUTURE Mr. Nickle said, "In 1952 and the years beyond we will see a continuing growth of the oil industry, the development of a vast petro-chemical industry in Alberta, the development of many other industries in the West related to supply of materials to the oil industry, and the export of part of Alberta's growing surplus of natural gas to neighboring provinces and to the United States."

Other special guests at the banquet included Mr. C. C. Cross of C. C. Cross Co. Ltd., Mr. A. G. Bailey of A. G. Bailey Co. Ltd., Mr. C. S. Corbett of Socony-Vacuum Exploration Co. Ltd., Mr. E. D. Loughney of Canadian Gulf Oil, and Mr. R. F. Cowley of Husky Oil and Refinery Ltd.

Miss Eleanor Crockett, retiring president, gave the vote of  thanks to the 1951 executive, and Miss Betty Beneditson won the bouquet of flowers.
