Cadets Hope To Maintain Leadership

Crescent Heights high school cadet corps, affiliated with the King's Own Calgary Regiment, winner of the Adams shield as the most efficient Army cadet corps in the city for 11 consecutive years, will attempt to maintain its record when the annual inspection is held in the school auditorium at 10.25 a.m., May 7.
Organized in October, 1940, when the Calgary school board authorized cadet corps for high schools, the Crescent Heights corps is the only one still functioning of five which were formed at that time.
The Crescent Heights corps placed 10th last year in the Youth of the Empire shoot and was second among Canadian teams in the competition open to teams throughout the British Empire.
IN THIS YEAR'S Royal Military rifle competition they placed sixth among 136 teams competing with an average of 96 for the top 10 riflemen.
They were Cadet Major Carl Ringness 98, Cadet Fred Garnett 98, Cadet Kay Young 98, Sgt. Grant Trimble 97, Cadet Wayne Dowler 97, S. Sgt. Sheila Sparkes 96, Cpl. Ronald Anderson 95, Cpl. Ronald Walker 95, Cadet Jack Hampson 95, Sgt. Harold Thornton 94 and Cadet Ken Forester 94.
In the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association shoot this year first class crests were awarded to Cadet Major Carl Ringness 295, Cpl. Herb Schmidt 289, Sgt. Grant Trimble 284, Cpl. Ron Anderson 280, Cpl. Ron Walker 284, Cpl. Don Craig 275, Cadet Kay Young 278, Cadet Fred Garnet 275, Cadet Wayne Dowler 275, Sgt. Harold Thornton 274, Sgt. Terry Law 271, Sgt. Alvin Richards 271.
SECOND CLASS crests were won by Cadet Jack Hampson 267, Cpl. David Church 260, Cadet Bob Church 258, Cadet Wayne Tyndall 250, Cadet Bob Shanning 253, and Cadet Carl Zorn 247.
Capt. J. J. Souter who has been a cadet instructor for 14 years has been in charge of the corps since 1944. Officer Commanding the corps is Cadet Major Carl Ringness who assists with the instruction.
