Society Discontinues Bible Distribution

Colportage work-- the distribution of Bibles-- by the British and Foreign Bible Society has been discontinued and the Lethbridge branch store closed, in 1955, it was learned at the annual meeting of the society Monday night.
During the past years, the sale of Bibles through colporteurs by this organization has become too costly to maintain and it was decided in May, 1954, to discontinue the work. In the five months of 1954 when the work was carried on, it brought only $850 into the society treasury.
NO SERVICE WILL be instigated to take its place. General book sales brought in $42,516 in Calgary alone, while $8,220 was realized from sales in the Lethbridge store.
This made a total of $50,667 for the past year, more than $1,000 less than the previous year's sales.
CONTRIBUTIONS during the year totalled $23,513, approximately the same figure as in 1953. Of this $15,714 was sent to the head office in Toronto and $2,308 was spent on colportage work.
The Third Jubilee Fund went over the top in 1954, the 150th anniversary of the society, at $412,000 instead of the original goal of $368,000.
REV. ANDREW S. WOOD, district secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society in his report thanked ministers, the branch officers, collectors and contributors for their loyal support.
Officers and members of the board for 1955, remain almost the same as in 1954 with a few minor changes. They are:
