25 Calgary Residents Win Poetry Awards

 

More than 25 Calgarians won awards and received honorable mention in the recent Alberta Poetry Contest. This is the 26th contest to be held.

 The following persons were winners in the competition:

SECOND PRIZE in the sonnets was awarded to James M. Moir of Calgary for his selection "As The Tree Skyward" and honorable mention was given "The Gift" by Isabelle McHaffie of Edmonton.

 Others who will have sonnets published are: Sara Carsley, Calgary, with the selection "A.D. 2000", Marion Kathleen Henry, Calgary, with the selection "Displaced", Richard L. Wegemer, Calgary, with the selection "Ebon and Lace", Isabelle McHaffie, Edmonton, with the selection "Alone".

 First prize in the short poem class was given to James McLaren Nicoll, Bowness, for his selection "Gravel Pit".

 Honorable mentions were: "Back Alley in February", by James McLaren Nicoll, Bowness; "Dancing Drumsticks", by Lillian E. Pfeifer; "Johnny From the Sun", by Marion Kathleen Henry; "Shadows", by Lillian E. Pfeifer; "Crescendo", by Mary Allan; "Foothill Tableau", by Agnes Aston Hill all of Calgary.

Lloyd, Calgary; "Dawn Memorial", by Jean MacAskill, Calgary; "The Home is Very Still", by Lenore Sills, Edmonton; "Pioneers", by Thomas Asplund, Lethbridge; "An Old One", by Sue Sterling, Calgary; "Seven Weeks of Years", by Catherine Goodwin, Edmonton; "Rare Bouquet", by Laura Ingram, Lethbridge; "Back to the Soil", by Tom McCracken, Hardisty.

 In the humorous verse awards went to the following. First prize to Elizabeth Garbutt of Calgary for "A Poet Speaks" and third < small > prize to  Jean Milne Holt of Peace River for "The Tale of the Old Timer".

 Honorable mentions were:   "Christmas Morning", by Lillian Armstrong Maze, Edmonton; "The Finer Points", by Richard L. Wegemer, Calgary;  "Wild Oats", by Zaidee Mahood Stewart, Banff; "Anniversary", by Ruth Mosher, Edmonton.

OTHER HUMOROUS poems to be published are: "A Little Flood < small>", by Zaidee Mahood Stewart, Banff; "Reward Offered", by Myrtle P. Hartroft, Calgary; "Vicious Circle", by Grace Aitkens, Namaka; "The Invincible One", by Margaret Taylor, Vermilion.

 Awards in the juvenile poems were given as follows: (under 15 years) Second prize to Sylvia Fletcher, Calgary for "The Wild White Stallion"; honorable mention went to John Clement, Calgary for "Silver" Terry McNeill, Calgary, for "An Alberta Chinook"; Sharon P. Magno, Lethbridge,  for "An Elf"; Judy Wheatcroft, Calgary for "Tis Blarny". Sharon P. Magno will also have "The River" published.

Fifteen to 18 years-- First prize to Stewart Flinn of Olds for "Once in a Life Time"; < small>< big>second prize to Gillian Amies of Edmonton for "The Rhinestone"; third prize to John Robert Davenall Turner of Calgary for "Nocturne".

 Honorable mention went to Donna Maynes of Cremona for her poem "The Fate of a Dinosaur".
