Western Canada Students Graduate
Grads
Told Success Lies in Determination

A relentless determination to master one
occupation-- this was the measure of success, Ald. Art Smith told the 253
graduates of Western Canada High School at their commencement Wednesday night.
Of
all the qualities needed to attain one's life objectives-- courage,
responsibility, imagination, enthusiasm-- this determination was the major
attribute that set apart from others the lives of great men.
"Higher vision drove these men"
said the speaker. "It enabled men like Edison, Columbus, to overcome
fantastic obstacles."
EQUATING
THIS intangible quality to the tangible, technical modern world, Mr. Smith
explained-- the demand of business and industry on the mental capacities of
young people wes ever-increasing today. Industry is looking for leadership, the
kind of leadership first developed in high school, whether in academic,
athletic or extra-curricular activities.
"In
the eyes of the world, you are no longer children, in any sense of the
word," Mr. Smith told the young people before him, "and soon you will
discover that your education throughout life will not be confined to the school
system."
HE
WARNED THEM against lazy minds, which in Voltaire's words were like old ovens--
"always heating, but seldom cooking."
F. L. Woodman, chairman of the evening, trustee,
and former principal of Western Canada
High School, also stressed the importance of being able to shoulder
responsibility. In a short poem to conclude the ceremony, he characterized the
discovery the graduates soon would make: "It takes much more than growing
up to be a real man-- breadth of vision, self-control, a gentler tongue, a
humbler spirit, wisdom to know, and to forget, courage to smile in the midst of
sorrow."
THE
INTRODUCTION of graduating students was made by Ward Steckle, principal, and T.
M. Perry, assistant principal.< /big>
Patricia
A. Reed and David F. Goodman delivered valedictory addresses, and Rev. D. K.
Walker gave the invocation to open the program.
Musical entertainment included two symphonic
works, "Presto" from Haydn's Symphony in C, and Ballet Music from
"Rosamunde" by Schubert by the Western orchestra; a piano solo by
Constance Channon; "Be Thou My Vision", a traditional Irish Air; and
two vocal duets by Wilma Steckle and Barbara Martinusen, "On Wings of
Song" and "Would That My Love". The music was directed by May
Powell.
