Nurses' Capping Ceremony Culminates 3 Year's Study
It was a happy day for 53 young women at the Holy Cross
Hospital Thursday when they were formally accepted as students of nursing in a
capping ceremony held in the chapel of the nurses' residence.
Proud too, were the 20 young women who received the black bands for their caps
signifying completion of a three-year course and success in school
examinations. Their formal graduation will be held in the fall.
After the ceremony a reception was held in the auditorium of the residence.at
which Miss Joan Crawford, president of the Students' Council introduced Rev. L.
D. Malo of Canmore, the guest speaker.
Greetings were extended by Rev. Edward Flanagan, chaplain at the Holy Cross
Hospital; Rev. Sister C. Leclerc, director of school of nursing and Mrs.Allan
Brown, president of the Holy Cross Alumne Association. An expression of thanks
was voiced by Miss Barbara Barret, president of the graduating class and Miss
Constance Sloane, president of the class of '62.
LAMP REPLICAS
K. L. Pollock, representing a pharmaceutical firm presented the graduates with
replicas of the lamp used by Florence Nightingale the famous British nurse who
instituted hospital nursing.
The Canadian Nurse Award to the best pre-clinical student was presented to
Sister Mary Jean, Midnapore, with the Order of the Sisters of Providence by
Miss Margaret Schumacher. Miss Schumacher is a member of the staff of the
University of Alberta at Edmonton and advisor to schools of nursing in Alberta.
Those presented with their black bands include: Miss Barbara Barrett, Miss
Madeline Nelson, both of Calgary; Miss Marion Ingalls and Miss Elsie Randall of
Kathryn; Miss Marlene Dannewald, Stettler; Miss Sheila George, Delburne; Miss
Betty Gieck, Airdrie; Miss Joyce Glanville, Bowness; Miss Eileen Kozma, Cayley;
Miss Beverly Larson, Edmonton; Miss Aline Lerouge, Red Deer and Miss Betty
Long, Lacombe.
Also receiving their bands are: Miss Mona Merchant, Victoria, B.C.; Miss
Marjory Michel, Crossfield; Miss Carole Morgan, Sundre; Miss Bettina Nielsen,
Forest Lawn; Miss Eileen Rimmer, Foremost; Miss Shirley Schafer, Hanna; Miss
Doreen Swanson, Taber; and Miss Edna Woitte, Warner.
Nursing caps, distinctive of the school and hospital were awarded to 53
students from B.C., Alta., Sask., and Virginia, USA.
